We can say most definitely, it depends!
Usually, car dealerships will not let you leave the lot if you do not have proof of insurance. While you will have to show the dealership proof of coverage, there is no need to buy a new policy for a new car.
If you are trading in a vehicle at the dealership, the vehicle you purchase will automatically have the exact same coverage as the vehicle you are trading in.
For example, does the traded-in vehicle have full coverage? Then the new vehicle automatically has the same coverage. If you are trading in a vehicle that has liability only, then be sure to call us before you drive off the lot and we can add full coverage to the newly purchased vehicle.
What happens if you are buying a vehicle without a trade-in? This happens all the time, especially on private-party purchases. In this situation, the vehicle you purchase will automatically have the same coverage as any vehicle on your policy carrying the broadest coverage. If one of the vehicles on your policy has full coverage, then the new-to-you car will automatically have the same full coverage.
As mentioned above, there is automatic coverage when buying a new car. But please note: You are required to notify us of your new vehicle. If you forget to notify us, you lose that automatic coverage sometimes in as little as seven days.
