There are more people at home, driving less, and having fewer accidents. Given this trend, over the last week we have seen a myriad of insurance companies making announcements about premium refunds or credits for their personal auto insurance customers. The credits or refunds average 15%, but a couple companies are offering more.
Here’s how it works. If your auto insurance is $1200 a year (prorated $100 a month), if the credit is 15%, then you will see $15 credited to your account in April & May. The credit for the month of April will show on your May invoice, and the credit for the month of May will show on your June invoice. That works out to be a $30 credit on your policy.
ACUITY: A one-time 7% discount will apply to the entire personal auto premium at the next renewal. For a client paying $1200 a year, this will equal $84.
Auto-Owners Insurance: 15% refund/credit for April/May.
Encompass Insurance: 15% refund/credit for April/May. Also, free Identity protection is provided to the entire United States until the end of the year. The refund/credit was applied on or around 04/23/2020.
Grange Insurance: 25% refund/credit for April/May.
Hanover Insurance: 15% refund/credit for April/May. Also, Hanover is donating $500,000 to provide pandemic-related assistance.
Hastings Mutual: 15% refund/credit for April/May.
The Hartford: 15% refund/credit for April/May.
Progressive: 20% refund/credit for April/May.
State Auto: A one-time 5% discount will apply to the entire personal auto premium at the next renewal. For a client paying $1200 a year, this will equal $60.
Travelers Insurance: 15% refund/credit for April/May. Travelers has also pledged $5 million to assist communities affected by COVID19 across North America, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland.
Western Reserve Group: WRG announced they are adjusting discounts and reducing rates by lowering personal auto rates 6% effective retro to March of this year. This is not a short term refund or credit, but addresses both immediate and future policyholders’ needs.
